49 ~ Month 5, Raw Vegan

Highlights from Month 5:

~ Made it over 2 weeks fully raw vegan!  Woo!

~ Sex is so much better!

~ Mind shift happened regarding what a “treat” means.

~ Craving exercise!

~ Hormones 75% better.

~ Better sense of humor!  Instead of feeling offended so often.

~ Not all is perfect – occasional detox headache or need to rest.  Then energy burst comes after that.

~ Mistake windows getting smaller.

45 – First Month as a Raw Vegan!

I’m doing a six month trial as a raw vegan, just finishing my first month on the 80/10/10 raw vegan diet, and my weight is already down almost 10 pounds! Woo!

I’m already noticing the asthma, allergies from the Spring blooms everywhere, and arthritis are GONE. My digestion is happy and thanking me with no more constipation 🙂

Gardening has begun! I have new flowers in the front pots, veggies and lettuce planted, and flowers on the roof.

As the lettuce springs up, I will move it to our new lettuce planters we are building in the back. They will look something like this… hopefully 🙂

Something Investigating:

I’ve learned that an apple a day can help dental health, especially of a raw/vegan person. As well as coconut oil for gum health.

Apples are a mildly acidic fruit. Because of their slightly astringent quality, they are an ideal food for cleansing and brightening teeth. The acidic nature of an apple is not enough to make a person’s teeth pearly white. The acid needs the help of the fiber-rich flesh of the apple.

Crunchy foods, including apples, celery, and carrots, act like mini toothbrushes when they are chewed. The crunchy bits actually help scrub away stubborn stains. This does not happen in a day but will take a while. The cleansing effect may be noticeable, even if it’s very slight, particularly if the apple eater is a coffee drinker who hadn’t been eating apples every day to begin with.

After eating an apple, it’s still important to brush your teeth. The apples still have sugar and acid in them which can damage the teeth. Leaving the sugar and acid on the teeth will reverse the benefits that eating an apple gave the teeth. Also, it’s a good idea to brush away the loosened plaque from the teeth so that it cannot become reattached to the teeth. If a tooth brush is not available after an apple, rinsing the apple down with some water may be the next best thing.

43 – Zero Overt Fats March

Out of necessity, I decided to do a month of zero overt fats on the 80/10/10 lifestyle.  Too many bodily pains happening after the cruise and a couple weeks of high fat eating.

I felt good about the decision, and so far the first half of March I’ve felt very good.  Some headaches and hormonal issues initially.  

I had 2 “cheat days” where I went back to cooked food, mainly vegetarian/vegan, but I feel fine about that.  In fact, I have a lot of hope that I could eat like this forever… mainly 80/10/10, with low fats, and then an occasional cheat day when some occasion comes up.  

My desire to exercise has increased, and my stamina has increased.  This week I did Zumba dancing for 60 minutes and took a 1.7 mile walk in the drizzling rain.

I can see myself continuing on for several months like this, perhaps adding in one avocado per week or so.

I don’t want to rush the detoxing, since it can be a bit painful at times.  I think slow and steady is a good idea for me.

41 – Back Up Plans

The past week or so I have been sticking with the fruit during the days, but indulging in high carb cooked dinners in the evenings (quinoa with lentils, potatoes, etc).

The cool thing about this is I’m staying pretty close to the 80/10/10 mark (80% carb, 10% protein, 10% fat) and my weight loss is maintaining nicely.  I haven’t lost any more weight, but I’m happy I’m not gaining any back either!

Digestion is still functioning as if I were mostly raw.

My energy and desire to exercise is still there.  I’m alternating between the Peak 8’s on the trampoline, Zumba, and skating.

Overall, I think this is a great fall back until I’m ready for the next fully raw 80/10/10 push.

The downfall is this week ended in a fully cooked, eat at restaurants day yesterday.  So congestion is really high right now, and that is super motivating to get back on track!

Here is a Back Up Plan I quite like for transitioning to a raw vegan lifestyle.

37 – Holidays

Oh the holidays…

I had planned to take off from my 80/10/10 raw/vegan diet for a couple days this week, but alas, it is turning into the whole week off.  Oh well.  I’m ok with this mainly.  I did 3 and a half weeks straight on 80/10/10 this last round and am very happy with the healthy results.  I kept hearing from family and friends how young I looked.  This surprised me, since I’m not even dying my hair right now… at all!

I like seeing what choices I actually make when not on the diet, and what no longer looks good to me.  I’m seeing that meat is generally not appealing now, unless it is mixed into a casserole.  I went out for breakfast with a friend today, and normally I would order bacon or turkey sausage with a cooked breakfast, but today… nope.  I ordered vegetarian, and that’s all I’m going to say about that 🙂

I did try to bring veggies and fruit to all the parties I’ve gone to.  In fact, these are samples of what I brought…

The veggies and hummus were eaten up, but the fruit trees were only half eaten.  So for the next party, I would do a much smaller fruit tree, if at all.  I also found that the base of the fruit tree works better if it’s a cantaloupe with a flat bottom cut out.  The first tree was made of an apple (base) and carrot, and it kept toppling over.  We propped it up with a clear fork 🙂  However, the cantaloupe based tree never toppled.

I imagine this would be a very fun project to do at home with kids.  It took me a lot longer to create though than I expected.  Thankfully, the second time I had help 🙂

I’ve seen some ladies in the Banana Girl Diet Challenge staying on fruit and greens through the whole holiday, and I’m very impressed!  Maybe next year I can give that a go.  Even their families are becoming vegan or raw/vegan.  It’s contagious!

36 – 80/10/10 the Banana Girl way

I started freaking out recently while eating 80/10/10 as much as possible.

Why?

Because I got a uti (urinary tract infection).  Every possible worrisome thought entered my mind…

“I’m dying,”

“It’s my diet,”

“I’ll have to give in and go get antibiotics, even though I never wanted to go that route again!”

I looked online for natural remedies and comfort for what was happening.  At first, I found a few recommendations for Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, so I followed those prescriptions.  The urgent symptoms ended after a bath in the stuff (not so bad) and starting to drink the vinegar with water (ick).

I was very relieved.

However, the minor symptoms were still lingering… on… and off.  Shopping was really difficult, because my mind was always on ‘where is the nearest bathroom?’

So, I was praying… a LOT!  “Which way should I go Lord?”

I kept hearing, “Rest, and trust.”  I felt like it just was going to take time to flush the real issue out.

So I started drinking more cranberry juice, and more and more!!!

A week later, still not completely gone,  I joined the Banana Girl Diet Challenge (A Banana Boy one exists as well, fyi).  And there I found more help.  People there confirmed for me that it’s going to take a little longer than just slapping some antibiotics at it to “heal” it quickly.  I felt comforted again, that it’s not going to last, it just has to heal naturally.

I heard that it’s from adrenal fatigue and I need lots of rest and water, and continue on the fruits, making sure to get all my calories in.  So that’s where I’m at now.  I feel like the worst of the battle is over, and I’m on the mend.

It’s been a roller coaster week, but I’m so thankful for the new friends at the Banana Girl Diet Challenge.  Thank you for your help and comfort!

35 – Raw Vegan Salad Dressing – Almond Butter Bliss

Check out my favorite dressing I’ve created for our 80/10/10 raw vegan salads!

Almond Butter Bliss Dressing

~ 1 T raw almond butter

~ 1/2 lemon (juice) or lime

~ 2 ounces of coconut water

~ optional – add 1 tsp of ginger

~ optional – slice of red pepper for some ZING!

Blend all ingredients together and pour over your salad.

This dressing is INCREDIBLY delicious with or without the ginger, so go whichever way sounds better to you!

I like it on a salad of romaine alone, or add butter lettuce, kale and arugula.

34 – Loving 80/10/10 Raw Vegan

Check out my video update (click on picture below) on living and loving 80/10/10 raw vegan!

I have been on the 80/10/10 raw vegan “diet” for 24 days now (the first week or so I was still transitioning over).

A few reasons why I’m LOVING it:

~ I have a list of health issues I wanted to clear up.  My digestive issues have almost completely cleared up on 80/10/10… in less than one week of doing this faithfully.

~ Clean living:  no cooking necessary 🙂

~ I have a sweet tooth for a reason, and it’s for FRUIT!

~ I feel more satisfied at a deep level.  My vitality and love for life is forever increasing.

~ Family seeing me, and joining in.

~~~~~~Daughter getting steady on the fruit and feeling better.  She has lost 5 pounds so far.

~~~~~~Husband getting on the salads in the evenings and increasing his fruit smoothies in the mornings.  He says he’s feeling better.

~ I’ve started exercising again, because my energy levels are increasing.

~ My weight loss total… so far is 7 pounds.  I lost the first 5 or 6 rather quickly.

~ My BMI (body mass index) is reducing.  Not that long ago I was up around 29% body fat… and now I’m at around 25%.

So, what do I eat now?

~ 80% fruits all day long (amazing smoothies, or just whole fruit, plus some “veggies” that really digest as fruit – see below)

~ 10% protein through greens and veggies, and some nuts or seeds

~ 10% fats – mainly in my salad dressings (see my Recipe tab for these)

Proper food combining made a huge difference for me with digestion.

For example, I’ve found that cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, and bell peppers are really fruits.  So they digest better with other fruits.

33 – Pura Vida – 80/10/10

PURE LIFE!

The Lord has just bumped me and my family up another level!

We have stumbled upon the 80/10/10 way to eat, and it is pure satisfaction!

I was having major digestive issues in the last few weeks, and started eliminating meat, gluten, dairy, soy, and cooked food from my life.  I was researching some blogs and found this way of eating that sounded like pure Heaven to my digestive system!

I’m not perfect at it yet, but the funny thing is… I’m more raw now than ever before!  Because I’m aiming so high, I’m landing in a really heavenly raw zone!  I love it! 🙂

I feel so satisfied eating this way.  My food cravings have disappeared!  I’m not kidding!  My cells and body feel so satiated that even if I get hungry at the end of the night a little bit (like after 11pm), I don’t need to eat anything.  It’s so wild!  I’ve been looking for this answer my whole life.  I always felt so hungry so quickly after eating cooked food.  Even if I would eat a huge meal, the hunger would return, and I never knew why.  Now I know why.  My cells were never satisfied with that food.  It was lifeless, nutrient drained and deficient.  My cells were malnourished in a big way!

There’s a quote that says, overweight people are actually starving to death (from malnourishment)!  I believe it!

I would have trouble losing enough weight and keeping it off, yet I was always so hungry eating crappy food.  It never made sense.

Sure, there are more things to learn on this “diet” but it has been the easiest transition for me yet.  My body loves the fruit.  I have wonderful smoothies all day long, then a big salad of greens and other goodies, limiting the fat to reasonable amounts.

Going raw in the first place was a lot harder than this, perhaps due to all the gourmet recipes I was trying to test and learn.   This plan is much simpler.  Few ingredients, or even just one ingredient sometimes 🙂

I’m so thankful this has come my way.  I feel like a new Jenni is emerging!
